I guess I should explain.? Mark in WV was aware of this.?? I replaced the
Rambler American gas tank with a first generation Mustang gas tank and fuel
level sender when I re-habilitated the car.? The exhaust routing then became
much more difficult.? The Mustang tank takes up the whole width of the trunk
floor under the car, unlike the American tank which was narrow and provided easy

access for the exhaust pipe to the rear.

OK, so there was once this super rare Matador with 401.  How many Matadors had
401 in 1974?

55 model 18-7        4dr Station Wagon
93 model 16-7        2dr Sedan Coupe (base)
315 model 16-8        Matador X Coupe
312 model 16-9        Matador Coupe Brougham

Of these ~ 750, any bets on there being more than twenty left?

Now check this out:

AMC 401 V-8 and 727 trans - $1500 (Santa fe Springs)

AMC 401 engine and torqueflite 727 trans pulled form a '74 matador. had 117k
miles on motor when pulled a few months ago. Engine has all smog equipment and
a/c compressor, even cruise control device! Pics if you want them.

PostingID: 228109857

So the Matador had only 117k, and was apparently a southwest car.  Yet it was
discarded just for the damn engine.

We in the hobby are ruining our own remaining stock.

nnaaaahhh.... ill tell you what a "waisted pick of the day" is. its when you
show up at the pick-a-part thats 90 miles away. (closest one to me, and only one

with an amc) so, im there pulling?a whole bunch of parts off the '85?4door eagle

sedan they have for?parts for my 2 sx4's. i had just 1 bolt left of the 3 bolts
that hold the front hub carrier to the steering knucle. my wife calls. (who had
been sitting in the car in the parkinglot) and said "um, the guy running the
place?asked if you were still there, and said to tell you to leave, he has been
closed for almost 30 min". i get up there with what i have. i cant?buy my parts
cause everything is shut down. heck, he ALMOST locked me in if he hadnt noticed
my wife in the rig. so, now, i have all 4 fender flares, bumper?end caps, heater

motor, hood release cable, and?1 more bolt to get the hub carrier. and tomorrow
morning, i got to go 90 miles ONE WAY to go get them.?but, on a good note, i got

to drop by jim s. shop and pick up an axle for my amc spirit im building into a
drag car. so wasnt a TOTAL loss.

Thanks for the confirmation - and other details added by all who
responded.

One more quick question ....

Because I'm struggling with the length of the engine in my specific
situation (e.g. the water pump "nose" is much closer to the radiator
than I'd like .... it's a long story), my sense is that most any of
the AMC V-8's would be 8 to 10 inches shorter than a 258 .... a couple
of approx. 4 inch cylinders and a couple of water jackets shorter.
Does that make sense.

Thanks again
Lynn in St George

Yes from 1972 up the AMC 6 and 8 share the same bell pattern. And yes
the raised # under the motor mount bracket is the CID. 1967 to 71 the
deck height was lower on the v-8 and the bell on the 6 was different.

Larry wrote recently that the 390 and 401 blocks are a bit wider than
290,343,360 blocks. I'm assuming the deck height is slightly taller?
Steve- I have the various block- should be straightforward to measure.

Indeed the 390 block is a bit wider than the 360 block at least.? I have a
couple of 360s in my spare room and a 1970 390 in the garage.? The 360s (casting

3195528) are about 18 1/8 inches across the widest dimension.? The 390 block
(casting 3195529) is about 18 1/2 inches across the widest point.?? Can't check
deck height.? Joe Fulton?

PnP here announces 1hour, 45 minutes, etc. until closing. Of course the PA
system itself leaves a bit to be desired.

At least they hadn't let the dogs out on you yet.
