Stamping code letters started about 1970. Before that it was a tooth count.
40 ÷ 13 = 3.0769... which rounds up to 3.08.
3.08 is a 6 cylinder size AMC model 15 diff. The equivalent model 20 would be
43/14 for 3.07:1
