I happened to have spent a 2-week business trip in Iran in 1979 just prior to the fall of the Shaw of Iran, later that year. I spent much of the time filming for the Shahbadoo (the Shah's wife) with the mistaken notion that the travel industry in Iran needed to be promoted & developed. But that's another story... the Shah fell before the project was completed. I spent much of that time in and around Tehran and even filmed at a Rial factory. Not sure of the spelling but it was the government-sponsored auto assembly plant. I had heard that the Rial was started with the Rambler American (rebadged as a Rial). There were Rambler (Rial) Americans all over the place at that time, however I don't thing they were still in production at that point since the Rials I saw rolling off the assembly line looked like Fiats. That's what I remember from 30+ years ago... I even remember seeing a Marlin parked on the street near the American embassy. I would hope that the appreciation of old American iron by at least some of the Iranian people can help them to remember that our countries could be friends and that perhaps they could influence their narrow-minded government to become more democratic.?I have worked with "Persians" in the past and so did my late wife (who was a nurse).? My experience was good and I?quickly?established a friendship?with one co-worker?but I have lost track?of him?over the years. I also own an?pre-war?(WWII) light airplane?for which only 120 copies were made.? It has a radial engine and 25 of thiese planes plush spare parts were sold to Iran?as instrument trainers just prior to?WWII.??I have wondered whether any of those exported planes still exist (or at least any of the engines?for which parts are very scarce).? I could just imagine?those engines lying in the desert somewhere with goats or camels eating the?grass and weeds around them.?The political?climate between our countries is so frosty that I would not even attempt to make contacts in Iran to locate some of those planes.? ?
