Not in this case. The lockup converter is going out ( bad vibes on startup and engine compression is pretty even) I put it in gear (forward or reverse) and wait for it to engage before pushing the gas.
The bell bolts were all missing but 1 when my buddy had me check it because the starter wouldn't engage. When he went to work in AK, he said I could have it since the carb clogged up with rust for the second time.

The slow first/reverse can be somewhat alleviated by letting the trans run in
neutral for a few moments before shifting to drive or reverse.
