You might be right. I've not messed with a 65 model 196, didn't have one until recently, and haven't touched it. I know they did a few odd things in 65, like the full flow oil filter for just that one year. Your guess about the 199/232 flywheel/flexplate is a good one, just can't confirm or deny. That's why I mentioned counting the teeth on the starter drive. Of course it's possible to have the same number of teeth and a different pitch on the flywheel, but not likely.

maybe im wrong, or was mis-informed, (cant remember where it was either now)
but i thougt i had read somewhere that in 65, the flywheel teeth were
different. said something about a different tooth count and gear pitch. maybe
they changed the flywheel/flexplate for the 199/232? 65 was the year they
fased out the 196 and went to the late 6cyl correct? maybe thats the
difference?
