Yes, and yes again."You could, same with the Donohue Javelins. The individual items could be ordered as there was nothing unique except the hood scoop on the Matador (the original Machine -- I don't think it was with the 71 package) and the duck-tail spoiler and Donohue signature sticker on the Donohue. You just got a price break on the Machine when ordered as a package. I don't recall if the 71 had "machine" decals on it or not. " (no)
"I think the package pieces like the console and a few other bits could be ordered without making it an actual Machine."
And a slight price break on 'package' if ordered together. However, not all probably did, just like people order base AMXs then load them up at dealer with Group 19
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/main/group19.htmstuff, of which usually cost them less than ordering a bona fide super stock. It didn't make it a super stock AMX, but damned close with all the goodies. On the 71 Matty Machine, no decals, no scoop, just looked like any regular Matador, my 71 Matador I tried to sell since Nixon administration that had 14,000 original miles (shown here at the aMO nationals in Houston in 2001, no buyers for $3500, drieve it home, yawn)
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/Photo_Gallery_AMC/71_matador_amc_nationals.jpgAfter reproducing a dozen Rebel Machine scoops I did 'set' one on the hood so a fellow in Mexico could see what it looked like, granted, not bolted down, but good image:
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/Photo_Gallery_AMC/christmaskids2004_021.jpg and then made my own 72 Matador 'machine' with that 401/AT 46,000 mile car http://www.planethoustonamx.com/Photo_Gallery_AMC/72_matty_ds_angle.jpg but yes, you could a la cart stuff, and well, no one would know anyhows, then or now.
