AFAIK. Jeep continued the use of the 904 in the 4&V6 XJs from 84-86. At least the fact they broke a lot of converter necks leads me to believe that. We always called them 904s, that could be wrong though. I am not able to check as I have an 83 TSM and an 89. Nothing in between. They are Model 904 wide ratio, 904 standard ratio, and 998 (fig. 2C-1). The Model 904 wide ratio is used in Spirit, Concord and Eagle automobiles with a four-cylinder engine. The Model 904 standard ratio transmission is used in six-cylinder Spirit and Concord automobiles. Six-cylinder Eagle automobiles are equipped with the Model 998 transmission." AMC usually had the next size up transmission as a heavy duty option, so there may be some four cylinder Eagles with a 998, but most should have the 904. There are occasional errors in the TSMs, but they are usually corrected after a year or two. Maybe AMC changed something and only the SX/4 four-cylinder models got the 904, 998 for the few four-cylinder "big" Eagles made. ------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jan 2010 13:13:55 -0700 From: Ken Ames <ameskg@xxxxxxxxx> I believe all the 4 cylinder Eagles did get the 998, not the 904. Spirit and Concord did get the 904 on 4 cylinder engines. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
