Quoted directly from 1981-83 TSMs: "Three automatic transmission models are used. They are Model 904 wide ratio, 904 standard ratio, and 998 (fig. 2C-1). The Model 904 wide ratio is used in Spirit, Concord and Eagle automobiles with a four-cylinder engine. The Model 904 standard ratio transmission is used in six-cylinder Spirit and Concord automobiles. Six-cylinder Eagle automobiles are equipped with the Model 998 transmission."AMC usually had the next size up transmission as a heavy duty option, so there may be some four cylinder Eagles with a 998, but most should have the 904. There are occasional errors in the TSMs, but they are usually corrected after a year or two. Maybe AMC changed something and only the SX/4 four-cylinder models got the 904, 998 for the few four-cylinder "big" Eagles made.
