Oh, I forgot something!! Tom mentioned that I had to shorten the shaft
on a T-96. I did -- about 1/16". That was to fit it to a 1974 258 crank
in a 1988 4.0L block with a 1979 multi-pattern bell from a Spirit. The
input shaft just did bottom out in the pilot hole. Apparently the pilot
hole on a 196 is slightly deeper, or the eclectic combination of parts
was just a little tighter together. "Clutch" would never disengage!! Had
to pull the trans 2-3 times to figure out what was happening... and
that was a T-96 with OD!! A standard T-96 would have been easy to pull
and stab back in, the longer bulk of the OD trans makes it harder --
almost as bad as a trans with a transfer case on it, but you don't have
the option of taking the OD off!
