Re: [AMC-list] calponycar adapter to replace the T-96 with T-5...

The strength is in the bell. While the T-96 has most of the weight up near the bell, the T-96 with OD is about the same bulk/mass/weight from end to end, and it probably weighs MORE than an aluminum cased T-5. The old Cast iron B-E auto trannys and the old GM Dual Range Hydramatic behemouth automatic transmission all weight a good bit and just hang of the bell too. The bell had to be strengthened to support the engine in a three point system -- the trans to bell bolt pattern was deepened to make a better "truss" type unit of the trans/bell/engine assembly. The short bolt pattern used on the T-96 wouldn't do for that! ----------- Date: Wed, 21 Oct 2009 10:12:31 -0700 From: tom jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> On Wed, Oct 21, 2009 at 07:56, Frank Swygert <farna@xxxxxxx> wrote: > The BELL HOUSING DEPTH should be 6.5", NOT the shaft length! Ahh, that explains a lot. (Though I have some recollection of you shortening
some input shaft?)

Will the T5 be happy hanging from the bellhousing only, eg. no rear
crossmember support? is the main one at this point. The T96 is cast iron and
short, so it's happy hanging in space. I wonder about the long aluminum T5.
Shouldn't be too hard to guesstimate. I'll google up weights etc today.
