it may have come from audi but one thing that soured the amc deal was
that porsche needed the engine back for their 924, a car that
apparently 'wasn't supposed to happen'.  they later replaced the audi
with a slant 4 takes from the 928's v8 and called it a 944.  and btw
the 928's designer was heavily influenced by the pacer, and its v8 and
the slant 4 had reynolds 390 high-silicon aluminum blocks just like
the chevy vega.
