I don't know how many of you will have the opportunity to watch but if you get on the Internet and go to www.nasa.gov, you can watch live video of the space shuttle Atlantis astronauts retrofitting the Hubble space telescope with new science instruments. They just overcame a problem with a stuck bolt!! They've got a torque limiter on their wratchet and the maximum setting they were using was not enough to get the main bolt loose that holds in one of the telescope's main cameras. They were almost ready to give up and leave the old camera in. Then, they had the idea to remove the torque limiter and try just good old elbow grease, knowing that if the bold broke the camera was staying in for good. What was most harrowing was listening to/watching the dialogue about how to deal with it. What would have taken you or me about 1 second to make a decision about took them a couple of minutes. Obviously they are trying to be careful because they're ability and time to come up with new approaches and contingencies is extremely limited. Still though, I was sitting there wishing I could swap places with them and just get the job done! :)) They are doing fantastic though. Given what they are working on, this is some really, really, REALLY cool shit! :) -John Jackson Amherst, MA '96 XJ __._,_.___ Messages in this topic ( 1 ) Reply (via web post) | Start a new topic Messages | Files | Photos | Links | Database | Polls | Members | Calendar Yahoo!
