I experimented with a rubber air dam on the front of my old 63 American. Used a piece of rubber "cove base" with the curve on the bottom tacked to a 3/4" plywood piece that was curved and bolted through the bottom of the lower valance. Worked and looked okay until the rubber (actually vinyl) started to get brittle... about 16-18 months time. It would flex if hit though. I wonder if one of those big "brushes" they use on the back of a motorhome would help much on the front?
I have a rear spoiler on my wagon -- the roof spoiler from a Gremlin! If it were just 2" wider it would align perfectly with the gutters. I'd make a new stainless steel center, but then the mounting posts would want to be where the roof rack posts are. As it is it looks okay, and the posts are just inside the roof rack posts.

Our ramblers aren't so good in that first category! My Classic has 8" ground
clearance (tall custom springs and tall tires). I've always considered a
simple air dam in front to be test-worthy. It would probably help cooling.
If it's a waste of time it's not much time materials. For my use, it would
have to flip up or something when I go camping. Piano hinge and a latch, so
if i do bump a curve it lets go or breaks the latch rather than tear off the
valance.
Not much else is practical on a station wagon! Imagine what a rear spoiler
would look like.... :-)
