I also think that the baffle, depending on the carb design, may keep fuel from splashing around and up and out the vent. I can't remember the 1909, so I'm not sure, but if it splashes out the vent you could be all fubarr'd without it! Don't ya just hate when guys tear into a carb and toss parts away! They probably thought it was an emmissions piece..... Those old shopas are NOT scary! Well, depending on the owners of course! Some you have to wonder how they stayed in business all these years. But, others are around because they keep EVERYTHING and remember how to fix 99% of it! I have a local guy that does alternators and starters in a Barn shed! excellent work and good too, NOW I am kicking myself as I FORGOT he was there! I just spent $204 for a frikkin REMAN alternator for the 98 Altima D&*^N I feel stupid! All it needed was bearings, but I do not feel up to it and last time I tried to save a starter it ended up fubarr'd due to crap brushes! bleepin, bleep, bleep anyway... The baffle PROBABLY stops "high pressure" (sic) gasoline coming from the inlet from splashing and affecting float level -- and a rock steady and correct float level is critical to carb operation. It would probably run "OK" without it, but have the mixture vary minute to minute, likely manifest as crappy mileage or somethign subtle. Idle screw spring, yeah you can use any old thing, as long as it allows the idle screw to bottom out without binding and is stiff enough to stop the screw from moving with vibration. THe needle inlet retainer, hmm, can't picture that part, there's so many variations... some have a little clippy thing that keeps the needle aligned to the seat, some dont... junkyard part, that. I don't have any 1909's or I'd mail you one. > Do I need it? What does it do? That would probably be a call to a > Rambler specialist, right? Maybe a local carb rebuilder? We actually have a couple scary-looking old fashioned shops here in Los Angeles. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
