Re: [AMC-list] AMC/Audi 2.0L (was 75 J-10 Central Coast)

I don't know the exact designation of the trans, but had one come in back about 1987 that had a blow 4 speed.
It was a dealership, and a buddy had a 4-speed out of a 79 mustang. Parts where to expensive for the trans in the Spirit so we sold the customer my buddies trans for $75 and the customer paid labor for me to swap the internals into the spirit trans from the mustang. 90% of the stuff swapped, there were a few differences, don't remember specifics, but I ended up with a good working trans. Car ran decent enough got pulled for speeding on the test drive :-O lucky I got off with a warning!

Yeah, if the 1.9L was a trubo diesel it might be okay, as it was the 2.0L with a four speed was just adequate fro a car the size and weight of a Gremlin. I've seen one in a Concord with auto trans -- must have been a real slug! Had 3.58 gears, I think, so might have been okay around town, but wouldn't want to get it on the highway! Sort of like my old 1.7L Alliance with auto trans...

The 2.0L didn't use an SR-4, it used an HR-1. I think it's a BW trans, but the case is different than the SR-4, so it's not just a lighter version. There are some internal differences in the TSM break-down, though they are similar.

On the Audi 2.0L (also found in the last couple years of Gremlins) there is also the possible option of a Jetta diesel 1.9L used in the late '80s (sadly non-turbo) I just turned one down from a friend of mine for $1200 so she is fixing it up instead (new struts, carpet etc) and selling it for $2500.
Wonder if they only used the SR4 in the 2.0L Gremlins?
