I'd like to say that if we ask about having an engine balanced around here. We typically here something to the effect of, "Balance and engine? sure, we can usually do that" "Depends on if'n we can get the right size pieces of plywood under the oilpan, else it just falls over in the back of the truck"... I don't know what they'd say if we asked to get the flywheel match balanced! I can see both your point of view and Davis'. Really if the engine was balanced, stock or at a shop. Match balancing the flywheel, done correctly will suffice. Key words, DONE PROPERLY. Doing the entire engine is doubtlessly the "best" way to do it. For someone like me, living here in a no balance zone, sending a pair of flywheels off would probably have to do. When given access to a shop and having sufficient funds I would pick having the whole deal balanced. That would be a hard choice to make should the engine be ready to run... Matchbalancing has been done for years without issue." Really?? It's been done for years but I HAVE seen issues (from other shops). How about the flywheel with holes drilled (or weights added) ON THE WRONG SIDE. Or weights put in the wrong position that hit the block. Yup seen several of them over the years. Naw,, if it's me runninn the balancer I'm going to caution that you still could have problems and I will NOT guaranty a no shake unless I can do the whole thing. I do NOT modify either the flywheel OR balancer unless there's absolutely no other way to go. But that's just ME!!
