Well, here I am replying to my own message. The engine would not idle at first. It had a freshly rebuilt (my job) RBS carb, so I thought maybe I screwed up on the rebuild. I changed out the carb for another one I had on the bench and it still wouldn't idle. Then I began looking for vacuum leaks. After disconnecting and plugging the vacuum outlets for the dist. advance and the vacuum wipers I finally noticed a missing pipe plug on the intake manifold. Once I plugged that opening, the car settled into a steady idle and I could idle it down like old Ford 8N tractor we had on the farm when I was a kid. In fact, with a little bit of valve clatter (still haven't adjusted them warm) it sounded a whole lot like that old Ford. All in all a good day. This week, I finally start on the fuel tank replacement. Then there's lots of electrical work to do. Temp gauge doesn't work, headlights don't work, and only one tail light works. Gotta rebuild the brakes too and change the tranny fluid and filter.
