A 64 Ambo has Ambassador in the Grill where the Classic has Rambler spelt
there so its not quite just a de chrome

That makes sense.
I did not think that the Classic was not offered in a ragtop, they had a
real time trying to keep the Ambassador and Classic seperated.  They wanted
to have people consider the Ambassador as the flagship car and it was not
really different enough to pull that off. That's why they stretched the
wheelbase in 65, Having the basier Classic available in the droptop would
have made keeping the split even harder!  They relented in 65 to the Classic
convert, I guess the differences where enough then to allow it.
  Finding a 64 Ambassador and dechroming it would be easiest way to acquire
a 64 Classic convert.  Of course, there's a LOT of holes to weld up to
dechrome a 64 Ambassador 1/4!

   The 65 got the stretched wheelbase so that would give it a whole
different vibe.
You could use a 65-66 Classic as the base, but your talking extensive
reskinning to convert to the older 64 exterior. I do think there seem to be
more 65-66 Classic converts around than 64 Ambassador converts though!
