I've had the foil backed bubble wrap on both sides of the firewall (engine compartment and passenger side) of my car for years. It's holding up well, and does a great job of heat insulation, but does absolutely nothing for sound. Not dense enough. Density means weight, nothing you can do about it. I also trimmed about 1/4" off each edge of my headliner and put the bubble wrap in the roof. It's basically reflective insulation, so it should help with summer heat -- can't say for sure. I also glued some in the doors using silicone. Again, not sure if it helps a whole lot.

I have the bubble wrap foil faced stuff. I just can't decide how well a job it will or will not do.
