Re: [Amc-list] 65 Rambler Stuff

Matt,

I'm slow I guess. I just finished reassembling the 65 American heater box tonight with the DMT kit you had a hand in creating. I'm just letting you know that everything fit fine. The only differences were that the long metal plate over one side of the heater box is not present on the 65 American. AMC just added a slightly thicker and more permanent gasket then let the firewall serve as the front of the box in that area. All of the foam and rubber parts from DMT fit fine. I used pop rivits with washers on the "plastic" side of the rivits and didn't crack any plastic. I just didn't want to hassle with a small order of bloom rivits from McMaster-Carr or Grainger. I even dropped the box of rivits and mixed up the aluminum and steel rivits and didn't notice any obvious differences in fastener strength. I did intend to use all aluminum rivits however.

Also, the small heater door seemed to be assembled differently than shown in your photo. I know your photo was not reversed because I can read the adhesive tube label, so no reversed negative there. One other thing. I used 3m 77 spray adhesive but could not find any information about how it stands up to heat. I've had good luck with it on upholstery projects and I even looked for the Permatex Contact Cement that you used, but no joy tonight. The sealing caulk supplied by DMT worked fine (less messy than the caulk in your photos) and I did refrigerate it before use like they recommend.

You might want to tell DMT that their kit works fine for the 65 and presumably the 64 Americans but it would be helpful to put an errata sheet in the kit to explain the differences for those two model years.

I'll put the blower motor back together and hopefully install the box tomorrow night if there is sufficient daylight left after supper. Thanks for getting this kit made.
