Re: [Amc-list] OT: Ford Speedometer issues

Same as any other speedo, including Ramblers. Check to see if the speedo pulled out of the back of the dash. (sometimes the nut separates from the cable) See if the cable moves when driving. (if not, then either the cable is bad, wiping out the gear in the trans, or the guy misrepresented fixing said gear) Could be he put the wrong gear in the trans too. IIRC, you had to change both the drive gear and the driven gear in Ford trans as a pair (numerically matched)

My boss bought another truck today and I had the duty of driving the 25 miles back from Post Falls, ID to Spokane, WA.

The guy he bought it from had told us that the speedometer quit working and he replaced the gear and it still didn't work right, just bounced all over the place. Well, the whole trip home the needle never moved, just pointed straight down.

I would love any suggestions on what could be wrong. It is a 1991 Ford F-150 Lariat XLT 4X4 with 302 V-8 and auto transmission.

And while I am on this subject, I had asked for advice about another Ford truck he had a couple years ago (which also happened to be a 1991 F-150 Lariat XLT but with a 300 6 cylinder). It was hard starting and had no power and kept filling the cylinders with fuel. After having it to a Ford dealer and another shop and both charging a bunch of money to say they didn't know what was wrong he took it to the automotive department of the community college. It took them a complete school year to finally forget what the diagnostic tools were saying and open up the engine but it turned out to be a blown head gasket (blown between cylinders). He still has that truck but now the transmission is bad so he is going to park it until spring and then have the transmission rebuilt in the spring.

Thanks in advance for any advice on the speedometer issue.

Jamie
