I'd reserve condemning it till it was clean then.
You'd be surprised what good can hide under that crud.
Sometimes the rot process stops under the layers anf things aren't near as bad as they seem.

With the look of the under the valve cover area.
Have you done a through look see under that car?
That kind of stuff in the engine may have occured under the car too.
No sense in getting all riled up to get it going if the body it is intended to move and roadworthy.

I'm sure that one is better than my 65, but I got all the mechanicals to make it go.
Just need the body ready to go.

Got a nice fresh dose of radiation in my shoulder today.
Follewed by some poking and prodding.
Follewed by a nice fresh dose of steroids in a big old needle into the joint space.

It's stiff and sore now, wores than before, doc thinks it's bursitus and the rotator cuff not doing it's thing anymore.
He hopes by doig the shot, adding Ultrasound to my PT and working it we can get it to calm down.
If not it could be cartiledge issues surrounding the implant. 
Not good.
