1. ATF works good. Pour in sparker holes and let sit over night. 2. Just leave the big nut alone! If the u-joints need replacing or the driveshaft/axle needs to be removed for some other reason, jack the car up by the rear axle (must be weight on the axle!) and disassemble the joint under the car. It has inside snap rings so it can be hard to get to in the cramped quarters, but that's the best way to go. Remove the caps on the rear axle yoke. I stick a block of wood against the yoke on the driveshaft (thick part!) and knock it over to remove the caps. Then you can twist the cross and drop it right out without touching the big nut. That nut has to be tightened to 200 ft/lbs to hold! The splines have to be clean and dry then the yoke knocked back to a certain measurement (in the TSM), then the nut tightened. If it's not tightened properly the shaft can move forward slightly and will then sling out from under the car once you hit the right bump in the road or accelerate hard. It doesn't take much -- I slung my first one out three times before I got it right (back in 79!). A girlfriend's father used to work for a Rambler dealership and told me how to change it without disturbing the nut. Retorquing the hub nuts is ALWAYS a good idea! 3. Think about a remote installation. You just need a way to pump the oil back to the engine. Little electric water pumps (like used in campers) work, but don't seem to last a real long time. Otherwise you should be able to run a cross tube from the exhaust under the engine to the passenger side, where there's more room to work. 4. The carb is either a 2V Carter WCD or a 1V Holley... should be a 1909. Little thing, about 1-1/4" venturi, bowl close up to the venturi with "Holley" cast into the top of the bowl. List number is 2555. ---------- Date: Sun, 13 Jul 2008 20:31:59 -0700 (PDT) From: d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> i have not picked the car up yet. hell, i didnt even tell the wife about it yet. THATS goin to need the ear plugs.... anyway. the plates on it were last tagged in '85. and yes, so i dont get the issues that tom and i had LAST summer, will pull the tank and clean it. what is the best stuff to use to penetrate into the rings? i have been told atf is real good to use. if i remember right, this car only had like 60,000 miles or so. could be 70. i know i know. tom is probably SICK AND TIRED of this, but this car would have the "big nut" rear that you talked about?? whats that all about? anything interesting there to get into? im going to tighten the hubs like i did on my classic. considering finding a small (2.0 or so) turbo in a salvage yard. maybe do sime rigging to fit one on there. no intercooler or nothing to start with. toy with it and see how that works with the blow thru. o ya, it does NOT have the same holley carb my classic does. what carb would this be? jets? rebuild kits?? -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
