You need 3.31-3.55 with that AW-4! The torque converter doesn't increase torque much (1.4:1 compared to around 2.5:1 for older US autos), first gear isn't real low, and OD is 0.70:1 like the old Borg-Warner units. I tried a 3.08 in my Classic wagon and it was way too high, engine only turned 1600 rpm around 70 mph, and it needs to turn around 2000 for best efficiency -- I found out the hard way! 82 Spirit/Concord used a 2.35 axle with manual trans, 2.21 with auto (but remember, there's at least a 2.5:1 torque multiplication going on with the 904). High altitude and trailer towing option was a 2.73 with 904 (no trailer towing option for the Spirit). Some California cars got a 2.53 axle, some the 2.21. Doesn't specify which cars/equipment got which axle, just auto trans. --------------------- Date: Mon, 7 Jul 2008 23:16:36 -0700 From: Jim Blair <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> How about gearing in an '82 Spirit with 4.2L auto? I found someone who might have a Model 20 for me (from a '78 AMX he used to race) Looking to get myself some seats and gas tank too. (Figure I'll need lower gearing with the 2wd AW4 and EFI I'm going to swap in once the '87 MJ is finished later this month) -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
