Lead acid battery charging is very complicated. You can use the 2x4
upside the head manner of charging them with cheap chargers but battery
life will suffer. Gel cells and sealed are more delicate in general (I
dunno much about the newfangled job you're running).
For daily drivers, alternators do a decent enough job if the wiring is
good (no excessive voltage drop between battery and alt).
Funny, I've drifted in another direction... I run cheap batteries. I get
6 years or more from even no-brand batteries by keeping the charging
system in good shape, keeping the car in good tune (starts within 1
second of cranking), and (trying to avoid) accidental deep discharge,
which is bad for ANY car battery. But it doesn't get cold here, that helps!
