Marc, the problem is the bore of hte master cylinder. A 70s Hornet MC will fit the American just fine. You might have to use an adapter (or better yet replace the line from MC to junction block), but the bore is the same. On the American power and manual brakes use the same bore MC. Don't use a 75-76 MC, has to be 74 or earlier or 77 and later. 75-76 used a 1-1/8" MC for power brakes, 1" for manual. The parts stores have screwed the books up and stock the same part for both sometimes. You can go to www.mpbrakes.com and order a Ford Fairlane power brake setup. Get the one with 1" bore. Note that you have to tell them it's for a Ford Fairlane or a hot rod. They won't sell it to you for an AMC because the supplier specs it for Ford and if for a hot rod liability is implied for the builder, not parts supplier. Sounds kooky, but that's how they cover themselves on liability issues. I've used that setup -- it's a Bendix, which is at least partially owned by Ford (or was...) and used by AMC for years. ============================================= Date: Tue, 27 May 2008 12:01:55 -0400 From: Marc Merkle <merkle123@xxxxxxxxxxx> Hi Folks, I am in need of a little help with my 66 American. I had a bad master cylinder that was bleeding by so I replaced it with a rebuilt unit from Autozone. I turned the old one in as a core and it is GONE! They did not ask if the car had power or manual drum brakes. I believe the unit I got was a power brake master which I had to adapt the lines from 1/4 to 3/16 as this was original on my car. I bled the brakes which went easily but now I have a extremely hard brake pedal. All four wheels will lock if you can push the pedal hard enough. I am looking at purchasing a power brake booster/master combo and converting to power brakes as I am finding that a manual brake master cylinder is almost impossible to find. What do I need to do to install this pwr brake unit, where do I get a vaccume source off the engine (199). Any help would be much appreciatedThanks in advance!Marc -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
