[Amc-list] My new oil pump adapater but no oil pressure

Jayson,

You should always pour some oil in the filter when you put on a new one. When starting an engine for the first time, you have to prime the engine first. There is more to it than just filling the oil pump with oil. Best to use petroleum jelly as it is thicker and will stay in the pump cavity until you start the priming process. To prime the engine, you will need a an oil pump primer. It goes in place of the distributor. If you don't have one for an AMC, you can use an oil distributor with all of the upper guts removed and just the shaft and housing left. Place the primer in the distributor hole so that the drive slot is engaged with the oil pump shaft. Take a 1/2 drill and attach it to the shaft of the oil pump primer and turn it on. Hold on as it will start to bog down as soon as the oil pump start pumping oil. Let the oil circulate for a 30 sec or so just to get it throughout the entire engine. Now you have oil in the system and know the
pump is working. If you don't prime it first, you are basically running the engine dry until the pump starts to pick up oil and circulate through the engine as you have already found out.

As we discussed in previous posts, it is best to use an oil with a high degree of zinc and phosphorus for flat tappet cam engines. It is also a real good idea to heat the oil up to 180-200 degrees if possible first to get the additives to bond to the metal surfaces prior to start up. You can do this by heating the oil prior to adding it to the crank case in a pan or old crock pot. These procedures will help ensure a proper break in is achieved and your engine lasts a long time.

If I was you, I would consider looking at a couple of the bearing before I went too far. It doesn't take long for metal to metal parts without lubricant to get damaged.

Hope this helps,

I recently purchased a new oil pump adapter for my 67 Rebel 290 V8 which was recently overhauled last year. I wanted to rid of the old original near 90 degree flow oil adapter. I am aware that the new 45 degree flow will increase oil pressure from the old AMC plague, lack of oil pressure. I even went as far as putting a new oil pump gear/pump on with proper clearance, as well for the new adapter to make it all complete. Unfortunately I had it all together, I wasn't aware of having to prime the adapter with oil. The engine knocked for 5 seconds, I turned it off, turned over again, knocked again. So, no oil pressure. I then took the adapter off again, filled the adapater with oil, including the oil filter w/oil. I found this out after googling amc engine oil pumps (gear type). Now I'm paranoid. WIll it work? I am very hesitant to turn over the engine again. Is there anything else I need to do or I can do to ensure this new gear and oil adapter
 will start up with the
proper oil pressure without ruining my engine? Any additional advice? Jayson
