I believe the longer ones are 4-1/4", but may be 4-1/2" -- only have a couple lying around and I know they are the short ones. Front left one should be a 6" stud from the factory, but a long bolt will work. It holds the oil fitler base, but don't torque the bolt over the filter base even with a spacer! Just use the one bolt to hold the filter bas on if you don't get a stud. It's safe to put the ground cable under a bolt, but I'd just mount the ground cable to a water pump or engine mount bolt instead. > > There are 7 short bolts, 7 long ones, and one 6" stud (or 8 long bolts). The left rear was a stud from the factory also, I think, so would be 6 long and 2 studs. The studs can be purchased from a fastener supply. Just make sure they are grade 8 equivalent -- all are standard coarse threads. Ford 289/302 uses 7/16" head bolts, and the 81-86 258. Not sure about lengths though. If you use standard bolt heads and not shoulder bolts (look like they have a washer made onto the head), use washers. Won't affect torque as long as you use grade 8 washers. Graded washers won't compress and are of uniform thickness. > > I wouldn't worry about any possible performance gain. The shop will probably take 0.020" off just to make sure it's flat if it needs cutting at all. IIRC that will raise compression about 0.25:1. You don't need more compression with that old engine anyway -- already has gobs of low speed torque, which is what compression helps more than anything else. > > ------------- > Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2008 19:33:31 -0700 (PDT) > From: d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> > > so, does anyone know off top of their head the size > bolt for the 196 head? my casper is sitting 45 miles > the WRONG way, and i am going to town in the morning. > will order new head gasket, and if anyone can tell me > the right bolts and how many, i forget now, i will get > them then. if not, when i get my head off, i will take > it in to the machine shop to have it checked. how much > can i shave off for a little boost in compression also > and still have valve clearance? if i shave it, i might > as well try to make some sort of improvement eh?? or > would that be a bad juju thing to do?? > > _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
