The Names were: Nash..was the 'Marque' of EVERYTHING Thru (that is including) 1957. Nash Rambler, Nash Ambassador, Nash Statesman (gone in '57). In 1958 there was a new 'Marque', "Rambler". The Ambassador was 'upscale', and since 'Rambler' was intended to portray economy, the Ambassador's 'original' name was "Ambassador by Rambler" (to sort of distance it from the 'low class' (or is that 'economy minded'?)). So, 'officially', everything starting with the '58 model year was 'Rambler' (Rambler American, Rambler Six (then Rambler Classic starting in 1961), Rambler Ambassador (nee 'Ambassador by Rambler'). The 'actual' nomenclature, however, was 'AMC' (as in AMC Metropolitan--Metropolitan was NEVER a 'Rambler' although it was a Nash (1954-1957) or Hudson (same years). Naturally, Hudson was also a badge engineered insertion into the AMC lineup starting with the Hash of '55 (Hudson Wasp and Hudson Hornet), but there were Hudson Ramblers right along with Nash Ramblers commencing in 1955 and running thru 1957. Again, in '58, everything became 'Rambler' (but NOT AMC Rambler. That change would not come until later). In 1965, the last Rambler Ambassadors were produced. For '66 you'd find instead AMC Ambassador along with AMC Rebel (the successor to the Classic line). Classic went out in '66 I believe and in '67 you had a Rebel instead. "Rebel" has been the name for the 8 cylinder version of the "Rambler 6" (precursor to the Classic)...when the 265 V-8 was installed into the 6's engine cavity, Presto!, you got a Rebel (of course, that was NOT THE Rambler Rebel of 1957 which was the 4dr ht body with gold anodized trim spears into which the Ambassador 327 engine was dropped (and a few other goodies added for 'performance'). That Rebel was the car the Playboy's sang about in their 1958 hit, 'BeepBeep' ("A Little Nash Rambler was following me, when what to my surprise..."). The only Rambler name operative from 1967 onward was that of the American...it was officially 'Rambler American' (NOT AMC Rambler American which is the name under which it has come to be 'registered' as...the 'Marque' was AMC but ONLY 'in name', not fact. It was a Rambler (Marque) American (type) 220, 330, 440 (trim level). Add Rogue, SCRambler toward the very end... In 1969 it was over for 'Rambler'. The American's successor was the Hornet (as manifested by the '10' series designation). The Gremlin was sort of an afterthought (and the Gremlin's birthday is coming up, April 01!..April Fools day!) and they had to make Gremlin '40 series')...but why confuse anyone...the point is... Rambler VERY Early, 1902-1912 (or so. What IS the actual 'end' of Rambler #1?) Then Rambler 'reborn' in name, 1950. It was the 'Nash Rambler' until 1955 when the boxy Rambler replaced it (it being the 3rd generation of the 'new Rambler) in '56. That '56 iteration was the platform for 'Rambler 6' (and the Rebel and the Classic, (even including the Ambassador from '62-64))up thru the enlargement in '67 (and the end of "Rambler Classic" and birth of "Rebel". Then Rambler's use was narrowed to only the American from '67 thru '69 and then disappeared entirely when it 'Rambled down the road into the history books forever'. The last successor to the 'NewRambler' was the Eagle of the Hornet descent. When they 'died' (in 1988) the very last AMC went with 'em. It isn't reaching far fetched to say 'Eagle' was a Rambler, for it was. The Eagle name ends in Japan with Mitsubishi's Eagle (The Talon), but that has no real connection with AMC whatever. Jeep was a 'cousin' by marriage, so it doesn't count. We are orphans now in every respect. But proud ones! Subject: [Amc-list] Model Names (was Re: cross country on ebay-hood spears?) We had Hudson Ramblers and Nash Ramblers 55 and 56. 57 I think was AMC Ramblers. I think the difference was which dealership sold them. Either Nash or Hudson. I think they got the dealerships consolidated by 1957 model year. My uncle had a small Hudson dealership in NoDak. I spent summer of '57 working for him. (I mostly worked on grain combines :) For a pretty complete illustration of all models, see: http://www.oldcarandtruckpictures.com/AmericanMotors/AmericanMotors.html ______________________________________________________________ Ralph Ausmann - Hillsboro, OR - > <ralph.ausmann@xxxxxxxxx> http://mysite.verizon.net/res79g4m/ ----- Original Message ----- From: jerijan baldwin Subject: Re: [Amc-list] cross country on ebay-hood spears? Yuppers, The '56 was the first 'boxy' look...tough to tell apart from the '57. The American was 'reborn' from minor sheet metal changes out of the '55. The '56 and '57 were actually 'Ramblers', but there was NO '57 Statesman, only '56. '57 and '56 both saw Ambassadors though. I thought the 56, 57, years only had Nashes and Hashes.
