Re: [Amc-list] 195.6 swap to 232...What's needed?

No need to quote any more, because IT WON'T FIT!! The 199/232/258 is about five inches too long. It can be done, but mount are the least of your problems. Get a universal engine mount from JCW made for 30's car frames. It will rest right on top of the Rambler rails and bolt on. Drill for the 232 mounts instead of SBC. Make a new trans cross member and bolt it in. That's the EASY part! Now for the hard stuff. Remove the heater from the center of the firewall. Cut out the center of the firewall and the floor back the length of the the trans tunnel. Mount the engine and trans then rebuild the firewall and tunnel around it. You'll end up with something similar to a 232 in a Pacer. Cut the hump off the left side inner fender panel and weld a flat piece of metal in. Mount a box type heater from a 50s truck or use an aftermarket setup. There, nothing to it!

You obviously missed all the posts about sticking a Ford 200/250 (NOT 240!) in a 58-63 American. That's the only other in-line six short and narrow enough to fit. I'd go with a 250 simply because you may as well get the most power you can if going to all the trouble to swap. The 200 should have a slight power gain over the 196, but you lose a lot of low speed torque -- might need more gear. The longer stroke 250 should come closer to the torque curve of the 196.

Greetings Gang,
Question: in order to plant a 1967 232 into a 1962 American where a 195.6
had been born, what is involved in this swap?
