[Amc-list] Doh question again - valve cover gasket?

This is probably just a d'oh question, but, ...

I popped off my valve cover and there was no gasket for it. After
looking around and going "gee whiz!", I popped the valve cover back on
and screwed down with the 2 screws with gaskets. I did not use a
gasket around the valve cover, nor did I use any RTV sealer or
whatever.

So - the dumb question is: on the cast iron 196 OHV engine, do you use
a gasket for the valve cover? Do you use sealant? I'm thinking yes,
but wanted to show my ignorance in it's full ignorant glory.
