" eddie, i've been all over your entire site and it's awesome! if you
" have a minute to help me out i thank you so much. i have a 74 AMC postal
" jeep (dj-5). my tranny went out. its in the shop and the mechanic tells
" me its a borg warner t5 tranny. well its an automatic and i dont think
" a t5 auto exists. everything i've researched says its an m-11. all i
" know is its a cast iron case, the torque converter has six mounting
" bolts to the fly-wheel, and its a really short tail shaft(about 25
" inches from bell housing to tail). i deliver a route so this downtime is
" killing me. is there any transmission in another vehicle i can use? i
" got one from a 76 gremlin and although the bell housing bolts up, it's
" too long(about 36 inches) and i cant cut that much out of my drive
" shaft. or do you know of a parts distributor who carries rebuild kits
" for it? any solution you could present me with would mean so much to me.
" thank you again for your time. aaron

it is an iron-case warner, m11 or m12 or the like. jag for one used
them until about '78, and though i don't think you could use the entire
tranny they should be a source of rebuild parts at least.

the ford fmx used up to about '80 is surprisingly a related design and
many parts like gaskets and friction materials are the same, though i
believe valve bodies are not.

stay away from the shop that thinks it's a t5!!! with that much
ignorance, even if you tell them what it is they'd still find a way to
screw it up. look for a non-chain shop that's been around for a few
decades; if there's an old guy still there he's probably worked on
these trannies when they were new and has all the experience.

later djs [late '70s?] used mopar autos like your gremlin one, so
there must be a short-shaft setup.

have you found postaljeep.net?
http://www.postaljeep.net/transmissions.htm may or may not be a help.
postaljeep.com used to be a great site with all sorts of technical
info and history of the dj5 but it appears to be owned by a squatter
now. ah! it's now at http://www.postal-jeep.com/ -- he must've
missed a payment...
