Hi Mark,
  Since the 88-91 starter has a shorter nose, that would mean the the flexplate is closer to the engine block.  This would explain why my torque converter bolt heads were/are occasionally dinging the engine plate, between the block and tranny.  After the shop replaced the tranny (had mine rebuilt) about 4.5 years ago, I ended up getting the occasional DING and ended up bending the bottom portion of the 1/8" thick plate out, to clear.
   
  Because of this, I'm considering more to swap the earlier flexplate, starter and torque converter, to get the added clearance. Hmmm ....

Unfortunetaly you can use the old style starter on the new fly/flex by having a 1/2" ish spacer made [i'd not recomend it]. You can't use the new starter on the old flywheel :[
