Oh right, it all comes back to me... duh, the T96 sliding gear is not so much a "weak" point as it's a constant opportunity to crash gears, like the "X" in figure-8 racing... a synchro type first isn't just easier to work it's less likely to break due to the sliding engagement mechanism.
