Tom, Jim, Thanks so much for the responses. In the past I haven't dealt with engine problems with my other cars, I usually had someone else fix that. I like this car much more, hence my desire to do things my self. I was unclear to where oil pressure was checked, but, I do not know where the oil sender is located on the engine so I will have to figure that out first. What oil pressure value am I looking for, and, would a compression gauge be ok for that also? Also, I was planning on changing the oil and filter asap too. Thanks for the helpful responses~ Mark __________________________ Message: 2 Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2008 21:06:13 -0800 (PST) From: Tom Jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [Amc-list] Low Oil Pressure when warm, 58 Rambler American To: LostWater@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, "AMC/Rambler owners, drivers and fans." <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <alpine.DEB.0.99.0802262104200.14656@xxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=us-ascii On Tue, 26 Feb 2008, Mark Dominesey wrote: > Hello All, New list member here as well as new Rambler owner. Not sure what you mean by 'spark plug holes' but the first thing I would do is put a pressure gauge in the sender hole and MEASURE oil pressure. Simple and immediate answer! > It could just be a bad sender, maybe? Or old/bad wiring to the gauge? Maybe a bad sender, but why spin engine bearings while you wait to find out? __________________________________________ Message: 9 Date: Tue, 26 Feb 2008 21:52:47 -0800 From: Jim Blair <carnuck@xxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [Amc-list] Low Oil Pressure when warm, 58 Rambler American To: "amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx" <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <BAY122-W27FF3C9710B469EDEE55BBAC1A0@xxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" You check oil pressure with a gauge screwed into the spot where the oil pressure sender goes. Compression is check through the sparkplug holes. (you can have lots of one and not the other) A bad sender is sometimes the problem, but if your oil filter is orange colored and the brand rhymes with damn, then a fresh oil change with (I think) 30W oil (not sure if they wanted detergent oil for that old or not?) and a better filter would likely save your engine.
