Re: [Amc-list] Low Oil Pressure when warm, 58 Rambler American

Tom, Jim,

Thanks so much for the responses. In the past I haven't dealt with engine
problems with my other cars, I usually had someone else fix that. I like
this car much more, hence my desire to do things my self.

I was unclear to where oil pressure was checked, but, I do not know where
the oil sender is located on the engine so I will have to figure that out
first. What oil pressure value am I looking for, and, would a compression
gauge be ok for that also?

Also, I was planning on changing the oil and filter asap too.

Thanks for the helpful responses~

Mark

Not sure what you mean by 'spark plug holes' but the first
thing I would do is put a pressure gauge in the sender hole
and MEASURE oil pressure. Simple and immediate answer!

Maybe a bad sender, but why spin engine bearings while you wait to find
out?

You check oil pressure with a gauge screwed into the spot where the oil
pressure
sender goes. Compression is check through the sparkplug holes. (you can
have lots of
one and not the other) A bad sender is sometimes the problem, but if your
oil filter
is orange colored and the brand rhymes with damn, then a fresh oil change
with (I
think) 30W oil (not sure if they wanted detergent oil for that old or
not?) and a
better filter would likely save your engine.
