I got the same feeling about my 1980 VW Rabbit. The last year I owned it (about 1984) the fuel pump disintegrated and put metal filings into the fuel injection manifold (spider type manifold). A new one was only available as a factory part and the repair cost me $1200. That soured me on Volkwagons forever. Strangely, that VW must have imprinted the German car "mystique" on two of my sons. One son has had two Turbo Golfs and the other has a late model Audi. The son with the Golfs has had some very large repair bills (electrical items, mostly) but he makes a good salary and doesn't mind paying the bills. The Audi has been flawless.
