Bruce, Replacing the grease seals is part of a normal brake job since you're supposed to service the wheel bearings at that time. The seals are easy to replace (pry them out with a big screw driver, drive new ones in with either a seal installer or a block of wood -- make sure they go in square). Cleaning the mess up is not difficult but may be tedious. Use brake cleaner and make sure you get it all off the backing plate as well as the drum (it's best to scape off any big globs before you use the brake cleaner so you don't need to use as much). If you're not sure that it's clean enough, you can spray some water on things (use a spray bottle, don't turn a hose loose on it). If it beads up, it's still oily. If you spray water, do not get it on the spindle. Spindles rust very fast when they get wet and rust can ruin them. You'll also need to let wet parts air dry before reassembly. Don't try to speed things up with WD-40 since that's petroleum based. Matt Bruce Griffis wrote: > Okay, I decided to work on the front brakes today. It was dangerous - so they parked it (they had someone lined up to repair it - he passed away, so they just left it as is). > > Anyway - the right front hub is leaking grease all over the place. Looks like it needs seals. I'm weighing buying the tools and doing it, or chickening out and just getting it done. Anyway - gotta finish the driver's side brakes, replace the master cylinder - then start reading the TSM to figure out what to do about grease all over the place. > > On a different note - anyone have experience with pre-cut brake lines? Does American parts depot carry them? Or anyone else? I'm trying to decide between using pre-cut (if available) or coughing up cash for the tool set and trying to make some. > > > _______________________________________________ > Amc-list mailing list > Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx > http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list > > > -- mhaas@xxxxxxx Cincinnati, OH http://www.mattsoldcars.com 1967 Rambler American wagon 1968 Rambler American sedan ================================================================= According to a February 2003 survey of Internet holdouts released by UCLA's Center for Communication Policy, people cite not having a computer as the No. 1 reason they won't go online. _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://splatter.wps.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
