The flip side is try telling the guy back in the late 60's or anywhere in the 70's, "We need to pull the engine on you Rambler to true the deck"...
   H#!! most mechanics back then would have laughed at you!  "oh, B.S., put some more goop on it". They'd say!
Your are right though. It, is most likely that the materials to both sides of the gasket are to blame and not the gasket itself! 
   Joe, better get his deck checked! :] [I said DECK, get your mind out of the gutter!]
