Re: [Amc-list] Breadbox American 440H with Twin-Stick (T-150/OD vs T-96/OD)

Not having had a T-150+OD I guess I spoke to soon. The length is
intriguing! It appears that the T-150 uses a much longer adapter and
output shaft than really needed (the BW OD adapter is only about 1.5",
the OD adapter on the T-150 appears to be 7-8" in length from the
illustration in the 76 TSM). My guess is that the standard output shaft
is used and the adapter makes up the length difference. If the T-150
shaft isn't the standard AMC length shaft, It's likely a standard shaft
for another make. There's no good reason to have a long adapter unless
the shaft is something already made. Most people don't realize that Gear
Vendors, the makers of a respected add-on overdrive, got their start
with AMC parts! They purchased the remaining stock of
Laycock-DeNormanville OD units from AMC when AMC stopped using them, and
made adapters for other trannys. GV later acquired manufacturing rights
and beefed up subsequent units, making them capable of accepting much
more power. ------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2007 15:58:33

It's a temptin thought, the T150+OD, but no dimension is compatible with
the american! Input shaft is larger (though the right disc would fix that);
longer; TO bearing snout is larger; retainer OD is WAY too large, the
bolts are in the way of machining it to fit the bell; wrong pilot bush
(could be fabbed). The T150 case is much fatter, and much longer. It's 12"
LONGER overall than the T96+OD! The American hump narrows down about half
way through the T150 (the T96 is small!), necessitating chopping out much
of the hump, never mind it would eliminate the console, it's a hack job.
Then the driveshaft won't fit... U-joint fiddling on the big-nut rear...
The T150 is heavier...

Some things are not meant to be!
