Tom, Finally a little bit of good luck came your way. Disaster happened in the driveway instead of freeway........ It almost has to be the shifter linkage. Worn bushings, loose arms, otherwise the shifter forks are broken. My 65 Chevelle (GM junk) had a muncie four speed transmission with a muncie shifter. The car was in the shop for a few months getting an engine rebuild, when my brother got it out of the shop he took it for a drive. The stupid junk muncie shifter allowed the transmission to be engaged in second and third gears simultaneously. when the clutch was released the trans exploded. I was a senior in high school at the time. Took a day off to get a transmission from a salvage yard and get it to my bro who had overseen the engine rebuild where he lived. I ended up getting detention for skipping a day of school. Shortly after these exciting events, I crashed the chevelle into a light pole, young kid, glare ice on the road, it bent in the front fender at the headlight. That damage was getting fixed when I traded the shitvelle in for a 70 Javelin. Still got the Javelin, and that's the AMC content for this post. take care Tom....
