Most builders nowadays use abs sheets. They don't warp or fall apart. if your vinyl is good that is what I would do.
It is an invisible mod that will be completely unseen without pulling the panels.
  Alternately any upholstery shop can get you backer boards if that is what you wish to stay with.
I did not know of the AMS sheets when I did mine and used 1/4" luan plywood sealed with polyurethane on both sides. I have since gotten for free ABS sheets to use in the convertible, Sign shops use them.
