Subject: [Amc-list] "Well Blow Me Down";....- 196 'Slug' Blues - From: Frank Swygert <farna@xxxxxxx> Date: Thu, 09 Aug 2007 09:02:04 -0600 To: amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx Sounds like Dick Datson's books. I don't know if Brien has actually seen one of thees books though. They are a collection of newsletters with no real organization. You have to read through every page and mark it as you go, or you won't be able to find the info easily again! The info is there, but a lot is theoretical. I don't mind theory, you got to have an idea first! <snip> Yes, I've seen them - and I agree - use PostIt sticky notes on pages where you want to refer back - create your own Tabs - the Info IS there thanks to alot of amc-list members input back then. <snip> Some is theoretical - some is basic how to do this shake 'n bake - it is worth the price of Admission. He does examine things and give valid reasons for his ideas -- such as turboing a 196. He looks at the block and head castings and the crank and rods. It's a heavy casting with forged crank and rods. The valves are a bit small and the intake tract a bit restrictive, but pressure overcomes that. So it is in theory a good turbo candidate. The only problem I have is the long stroke/small bore. <snip> Small Bore is Not a bad thing for Flame Front Travel in a Turbo engine. It won't turn up very quick, and won't be a fast turner. <snip> It will 'turn up' much faster Turbo'd than as a NA [normally aspirated] engine - The block can be overbored up to 1/8" and still have plenty strength (at least for normal aspiration). <snip> Sonic Testing will tell the Truth - if you're adding Forged Turbo Pistons to the Forged Crank Forged Rods - you can use tht 1/8" to find a fit for a Piston / Ring Pak set - then you can run upward of 6lbs. Boost - but you'll need better mangement and an Intercooler - I'd just stay with 5 to 6 Lbs. with a Holley 500cfm 2bbl and be happy with the extra 'Snot'. I had (have?) an old Hot Rod article from the early 60s where a guy was running a 55 Rambler two door in some bracket racing class. He bored the block 0.0805 over and used a 184 crank to get a better rod length/bore ratio (3.25" bore, 4" stroke) and used a 4.11 OD rear axle. I don't recall now if it was a flathead or OHV -- I think the flathead. Finding pistons for the OHV would be difficult because of the unique offset dome. <snip> If the Stock Pistons are 'Dome' - the flat top 'Turbo' Pistons will work well - bore and wrist pin heigth will take some research to keep costs down - but staarting with a Forged Factory Crank and Factory Rods puts you ahead of the game. -- ___ =Bt= /~ ~\ milnersXcoupe |_ | "The Heretic" |/ __-__ \ /~ ~~-_ ~~ -~~\ ~\ / | \ , / / \ // _ _---~~~ //-_ \ / (/~~ ) _____/-__ ~-_ _-\ _________ / _-~\\0) ~~~~ ~~-_ \__--~~ `\ ___---~~~ /' /_-~ _-/' )~/ /' (___________/ _-~/' _-~~/ _-~ _ ----- _~-_\\\\ _-~ /' __--~ (_ ______---~~~--_ _-~ ~-_~\\\\ ( ( -_~ ~-_ | ~-_ /~~~~\ \ \~~ ~-_ ~-_ ~\ ~~--__-----_ \ ; / \ ______-----\ ~-__~-~~~~~~--_ ~~--_ \ . | | \((*)~~~~~~~~~~| __--~~ ~-_ ) | | | \ |~|~---------)__--~~ \_____________/ / , \ ~-----~ / /~ ) \ ~-----~ / ~-_ _-~ /_______________________________/ `-_ _-~ ~ ----- ~ ~ ----- ~ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
