The good is it doesn't break down as fast as conventional oil. The bad is it costs 2-3 times as much!!! I use it depending on the vehicle. I drive in mixed conditions. Change oil every 5K. I've found in my experience that any vehilce that requires 10w-30 or thicker that the synthetics get better mpg. In the new stuff requiring 5w-30 or thinner I've seen virtually no improvement in mpg so I don't use it. As for 5k on conventional oil, well I usually keep my wifes car about 5-6 yeays and 80K. So that always proved fine. However we neglected to trade or sell the 98 Altima at that point. It now has 133K on it, always on conventional, sometimes it has gone as much as 6k between changes. It's never had a mechanical failure or repair of any sort. Someday I may wish I'd used synthetics in it, but I haven't seen any signs of that being needed, YET! -- Mark Price Morgantown, WV 1969 AMC Rambler, 4.0L, EFI, T-5 " I was different before people dared to be different" -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "William Renshaw" <lionwren@xxxxxxxxxxx> > > Just purchased a new car a couple of weeks ago and would like to use > synthetic oil instead of conventional oil.
