HA!! Remember the Olds Deisel fiasco that cost GM a lot of reputation? That was a big block, and it pounded bearings out! I don't recall reading about ANY AMC small diesels, just the big dual fuel military rigs (duece and a half). Small diesels were available in Jeeps, but mostly overseas and not offered here (with a couple exceptions, such as the Renault turbo diesel). they were always purchased since there wasn't enough volume to consider making their own. Now you MIGHT be able to take a GEN-1 AMC V-8 and convert it to a diesel. A 250 would have a heavier block than an Olds big block, and should have adequate bearing area for that displacement. Might even be okay with one of the larger ones, but the bigger the bore the more pressure you have on the bearings. If I were contemplating something like this I'd stick with the smallest bore (most bearing area to bore ratio). I would think that maybe one of the electronic diesel EFI systems could be adapted. Squirting the diesel in behind the valve should even be okay, then use the sparker hole for a glow plug for cold starts. Wonder if that would work? If not, you'd have to use the sparker hole for an injector or do some major machine work. --------------------- Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2007 11:15:33 -0400 From: greg_taylor@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx I've never seen this pop up in AMC discussions before ... did AMC ever create a V8 diesel prototype? What would be involved in converting an AMC V8 over to make it a diesel? An idea I've been milling around for my '89 Grand Wagoneer. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AMC.html (free download available!) _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
