Well, I have pics with an article in the last AMC (just sent out last week!) detailing putting an early Ford Ranger axle into a 65 American. For about $450 the guy bought an 88 Ranger axle w/3.45 gears (and the driveshaft!), had the spring pads moved (cut off and welded back by a shop), and had a custom driveshaft made to fit. The cost includes a brake job on the Ranger brakes, which were retained. I'm not sure how much stronger that axle is than the AMC 15. It was swapped due to leaks in the "big nut" type rear axle. The pinion seal for those is all but impossible to find -- it may be impossible now (though I found one on e-bay a couple years ago -- keeping it "just in case"). Need this issue?
