My 70 AMX doesn't have staggered shocks. They are both mounted behind the crossmember. Been that way since it was delivered to me in Dec. 1969.

AMC made the modification by adding a bracket on one side for the upper shock mount. The original upper mounts in the body were retained through the 70 model year, so by deleting the bracket, a staggered shock car could be converted to non-staggered.

Why your 70 AMX come from the factory without the mod installed is anybody's guess. Someone f'ed up on the line? They ran out of brackets? Who knows? My 69 has the bracket on it, although I can't swear (actually I do that regularly) that it came that way from the factory, I'm pretty sure the mod was introduced for at least part of the 69 model year.
