There are "sleeve" bags that don't change diameter (they "telescope"), but are taller and generally have less range than the convoluted bags that get larger in diameter as they collapse. The convoluted bags, however, need a spacer when fit inside typical AMC/Rambler spring towers. There should be plenty room for sleeve type bags and still have adequate travel. Remember, bags have to have a certain amount of air in them to operate. They won't work well lowered (handling and ride is grossly affected) and they can be over extended (to much air). So you have to select the right bag. Just idling through the parking lot should be fine when lowered, but not "real" driving. The same with to much weight on them -- there is a minimum and maximum air pressure for operation.

There's a bag company out that advertises that their bags "do not change
diameter" I can't remember which one it is though. The Firestone bags will
expand in all directions when inflated. Narrow bags that don't expand could
likely be found for Americans and Javelin/AMX's if you don't buy cheap bags.
It would be fairly easy to build a mounting plate for the top of the trunnion on the small car
trunions. just a cup that would sit over the trunion. You could even offset it
slightly toward the inner fender if needed. As far as bag diameters, now that
may be the killer. I haven't looked to see how narrow they come.
