I've had someone long ago tell me that they didn't like AMC axles because of all the jumbled parts -- they had to get a complete axle assembly for a 60 American because the axle shaft from one wouldn't fit in another. I figured the guy just got the wrong axle sahfts, but while scanning my 60-65 parts book, I ran across a note stating that THREE DIFFERENT types of axles were used on six cylinder cars and TWO on V-8 cars. Type 1 I-6 has 16 cut splines, Type 2 I-6 has 16 cut splines, and Type 3 I-6 has 27 rolled splines. All three types use a different differential bearing cup. Type 1 V-8 axles have 16 cut splines, and Type 2 V-8 has 29 rolled splines. At least the V-8 axles use the same bearings! How this slipped through I don't know, but at least the problem was fixed for 1961 and later. ============================================================= Posted by wixList Archiver -- http://www.amxfiles.com/wixlist _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
