Took the valves out of one of the original 327 heads tonight.
Kind of funky devils. I'm not sure what they were thinking. It appears the the dual center exhaust port is actually likely the least restrictive of the bunch. Lots of room for improvement though they will never be race heads.
  I don't see that shrouding of larger valves, up to the 1.94 or so will be too much of a problem. I'm going to try and strip the other down in the next couple of days then take them in and get them boiled and cleaned up. That'll give me a chance to talk to a shop about what "we" can do to them to help them out without killing them!
   I'm going to keep watching for valves. I'm thinking the Elgin stainless valves steel ones may be the ones that end up being used. If the shop [whichever one I decide on] is agreeable I may get those valves then if sizing needs to be reduced the shop can cut the heads down to desired demensions. That way we can end up with as good a situation as possible. There is a lot that can be done to smooth the castings up too. A bunch of parting lines and steps in the port/bowl areas. Enlarging the valves will allow some improvements around the seats.
   Notes on the heads I have. They have had new guides installed. they had fancy seals in place, little flat tin and rubber gizmos with small springs that reached from the retainer to the seal and held it down against the head. I've never seen the like before. They also have flat damper coils inside the springs, I'm not sure if all Gen I engines had these springs or if they are replacement springs. I'll have to look to see if the springs are stock pieces. From the looks of things these heads may be practice pieces. It's possible a fresh virgin set will be a better starting point. The seats have been reground and don't appear to be the same. The orignal valves are groudn too thin and several were solidly rusted in the head. It took a BFH and some solid whacks to get them our, Hmmm, seems to be recurring problems lately with stuck valves in Rambler heads! Maybe it doesn't matter at all since I plan on going to larger valves and will be moving into virgin metal.
  I need to look and see if I can find Datsons books, maybe they will help me make some choices.
