Date: Monday, March 12, 2007 08:54 AM From: Archimedes <Freedom@xxxxxxxx> Time Magazine has been putting its past issues online. While I normally make a habit of avoiding the horrid magazine in favor of better ones like Reason (see http://www.reason.com ), this one article caught my eye: *************************************************** American Motors' New Gospel -- Page 1 -- TIME Until he invested more than $2000000 in ailing American Motors Corp. to become ... Evans' father, a Virginia lumber dealer, made millions by inventing and ... <http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,899250,00.html?iid=chi x-sphere > ------------ Seems that even AMC realized Abernethy was spending the company to death, and they put someone else up where he could be checked long before he (Abernethy) left! The writer states that it was illogical to blame Romney for the boxy designs, but he's partially correct. The 63 Classic and 64 American were designed under Romney's "rule" and approved for production by him. It took at least two years for a new CEO to make any significant styling changes, and the 65 was the first that Abernethy was able to influence. Now I don't think of the 63 and 64 Classic as particularly boxy -- those designs are still rather handsome even today. The squared off 65 and 66 are a different story! Under the skin the same as the 63-64, but the look is totally different and much more stodgy looking -- at least to me. I still don't blame Evans for laying it on the guy no longer around -- he still had to work with Abernethy for a while! From the sound of the writer, Abernethy knew who was being chastised -- but maybe that was because Evans was put over him to begin with! _______________________________________________ Amc-list mailing list Amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list
